Sun, Sea & Hydrogen

Context & Problem definition:

Tourism is the main economic resource of the island, but it also causes a significant amount of private vehicular traffic, which is difficult to substantially reduce using normal public transport, given the island’s layout, with more than 200 small beaches and coves and long, winding roads that reach them.

Description of the challenge:

Reducing this traffic while simultaneously enhancing access to environmental and landscape resources is our goal. The project envisions a maritime transport system that connects the main locations accessible by public transport with the rest of the territory.

Technical specifications if needed (or requirements to be fulfilled to make the proposal valuable)

The idea is to utilize the surplus renewable energy produced by the CER (Renewable Energy Community) to power these transport means. The technologies needed for this challenge are:

  • Small-scale hydrogen production ( from surplus renowable enrgy ) and storage systems from seawater to power maritime and land transportation networks.
