The area of the island of Brač is located on the largest central Dalmatian island in terms of surface area and population – Brač, which occupies a land area of 395.2 km2, and according to the 2021 Census, 13,825 inhabitants lived on it in 5,507 households.
In the City of Supetar, waste management is carried out by the company of the Municipal Company GRAD d.o.o., which performs municipal services, with maximum respect for environmental protection and the public interest of the local community, and covers an area of approximately 30 km2.
The company Michieli-Tomić d.o.o., on the basis of a concession, manages waste in seven municipalities on the island of Brač and covers an area of 364 km2
The waste management system is set up in a modern way, with a system of containers for primary waste selection at the point of origin, a collection system using bags collected from the population on a certain day of the month, a system of primary selection at the economy with an emphasis on hotels, and sorting of all collected waste.
Waste is collected at the doorstep in chipped bins with a capacity of 120 liters or waste is collected in common containers of 1100 liters located on green islands.
To cover the entire area of the Island of Brač at more than 1200 locations, a System for Automatic Electronic Identification of Waste Containers and Waste Collection Trucks with a solution for optimizing waste collection truck routes while monitoring the fullness of containers in real time is required.
Such an application solution would solve several problems, from charging for waste collection services according to performance - volume and number of emptyings or weight to demonstrable service performance as well as better utilization of previous machines and people while reducing costs and increasing efficiency.
Given the shortage of drivers and their import during the tourist season, an application solution with container locations and a route optimizer would be needed to make it easier for new drivers to perform waste collection tasks in unfamiliar terrain.
